Stable WLAN in your Warehouse
April 2021
Mobile working is convenient and it saves time, but what if your connection keeps dropping or faltering? This not only leads to a loss of productivity but also more mistakes are made. In addition, employees become frustrated with the equipment they have to work with. Failure to address this issue will ultimately result in dissatisfied employees and customers.

Stable WiFi network
When we at DatAction talk about a WiFi network, we are talking about networks in professional, business environments such as warehouses, cold stores, factory halls, outdoor areas, etc.
It is precisely in these environments where mobile devices are used a lot. The operation of the mobile network is therefore extremely important. Wi-Fi is often the only thing that allows the mobile device to communicate quickly and reliably because 4G doesn’t always work well in these types of environments. The WiFi network must therefore be stable and reliable. Whether it concerns the mobile computer, voice terminal, scanner, printer or other mobile devices: the employee must be able to sail blindly on the operation of these devices.
The issues from the warehouse
Imagine the situation that a warehouse worker walks through the warehouse with a scanner. In a large warehouse there are sometimes more than 40 access points. If 2 of these do not work properly, the employee will notice that his scanner does not respond properly in some places in the warehouse. And a little later, when he walks 10 or 20 meters, the mobile device works again. You can imagine how frustrating and time consuming this is. In practice, the underlying problem is almost always that there is no good Wi-Fi signal coverage in the entire warehouse or that there is a source of interference. For the warehouse worker, it will seem that the application on his mobile devices is glitching, the screen seems to be frozen. The fact is that he cannot do his job properly. But what is the solution to such a problem?
How do you get stable wireless connections in a WiFi network?
To install or check a WiFi network, we carry out a site survey. This is a measurement to see where access points should be placed in order to obtain sufficient network coverage everywhere and to determine whether there are sources of interference. Sources of interference are common in industrial environments and warehouses. Think of things like electric roller doors in combination with wireless door openers or something as practical as security systems. If there is not enough coverage, or if there are sources of interference, it results in the same problem: sometimes a mobile device works and sometimes it doesn’t.
Roaming deserves attention
In addition to sufficient coverage and avoidance of sources of interference, it is important that the components of the network are technically well linked to each other and that there is sufficient overlap in the coverage of access points. This is necessary for good roaming, which means that the connection is transferred from one transmitter to another. That is also an important aspect in this kind of industrial environment, because you want this to happen seamlessly. It should not matter to the operation of the equipment in practice whether the employee, for example, drives a forklift truck, goes through a roller door, or is present at another location in the warehouse or moves from A to B. Because, and it is so practical, the connection must also be good in a squatting position with your back to the transmitter.

Designing a WiFi network for a new warehouse
Sometimes it is necessary to design a WiFi network before the building is built. When you build a new warehouse, for example, you naturally also want a wireless network in it. You want to have the WiFi network installed during construction because once the warehouse has been set up, you can hardly reach it properly. If only because of the enormous amount of scaffolding, the moving forklifts and other equipment.
Based on our years of experience, we have a solution for this. With the data from measurements in comparable situations, we can, based on the
construction drawing, the scaffolding plan and the type of goods that will be placed in the room
give good advice. We indicate where the access points should be placed and provide a guarantee that there will be sufficient coverage.
In brief
DatAction knows better than anyone the issues that arise with a WLAN in a warehouse or factory. We are happy to explain the technical possibilities of your wireless network. To get your network working perfectly (again), we look, among other things, at the most optimal configuration for the wireless equipment, whether there are sources of interference and whether the wireless network is seamlessly integrated with the fixed network. Even if there is no wireless network yet, we can use a site survey to determine the number of access points and their most optimal location. It is important that the access points have sufficient overlap with each other to ensure good roaming of the mobile devices. We shape all this in accordance with the latest technical developments, so that your network is safe and future-proof.
